Traveling Calisthenics

I’m traveling across the country to visit my brother and niece for three days (plus two travel days), and I’m not going to have gym access, and even if I did, I wouldn’t have time to use it.

Going five days without a workout probably wouldn’t kill me, especially because I don’t have any major competitions for several more weeks. Having a bit of a break will probably be good for my body to give it time to heal.

But what I’ve learned about myself is the longer I go without working out, the harder it is to start again, so I don’t want to go a full five days without any exercise.

So I’m going to rely on calisthenics and yoga to get me through the rest of the week because I don’t need any equipment for them—they rely on the weight of your own body to build muscle.

Basic calisthenics exercises include

  • Pushups / planks
  • Sit ups / crunches / other ab movements
  • Squats / lunges
  • Dips
  • Chin ups / pull ups (if I can find something to hang on in my brother’s house)
(2/13/17 Update) You could even check out The Complete List of calisthenics exercises from Man vs. Weight. Don't let the name sway you: it's definitely for women, too.

I have some yoga videos on my phone, and even if I didn’t I know some basic yoga moves to stay limber.

I hope to get in 10-15 minutes of calisthenics in the mornings before anyone else wakes up. Wish me luck!
